SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The Minnesota Lynx and Golden State Valkyries meet Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Chase Center in a WNBA matchup between two of the league’s top teams. Minnesota (29-7) owns the WNBA’s best record and has won both previous meetings with Golden State this season: 87-84 at home on June 4 and 81-75 on the road June 19. The Valkyries (25-9) have not beaten the Lynx this year, but they enter with a six-game winning streak, their last loss a 91-89 setback at Phoenix on July 29. Olivia Miles has been central to Minnesota’s success. The Lynx guard is coming off a 23-point, eight-assist performance in a 92-87 win at Las Vegas on Saturday. In her last nine games, Miles has averaged 20.7 points and 6.7 assists, with six 20-point outings. She has also shown passing flair, handing out 13 assists against Dallas on Aug. 9 and eight assists in back-to-back games against Toronto on July 28 and Las Vegas on Aug. 15. Napheesa Collier added 19 points and six rebounds in the Las Vegas victory, and Natasha Howard recorded a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double. Golden State will counter with Gabby Williams, who led the Valkyries with 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Monday’s 78-70 win over Dallas. Williams has scored in double figures in all six games during Golden State’s winning streak, including 13 points against Chicago, 19 at Dallas and 15 against Toronto, often in limited minutes. The Valkyries also received 16 points from Veronica Burton and 10 from Tiffany Hayes against Dallas. Golden State has held opponents below 80 points in each of its last four games. Minnesota has won four straight since its last loss, an 89-82 defeat at home to Los Angeles on Aug. 6. Overall, the Lynx are 10-1 in their last 11. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 95-80 Golden State victory, but oddsmakers have installed Minnesota as a 2.5-point favorite. The over/under is 166.5. The teams will meet again Aug. 24 in Minnesota, making Wednesday’s game the first half of a pivotal home-and-home. For now, the Lynx hold the season-series edge and the league’s best record. The Valkyries aim to prove their six-game surge is enough to finally solve the team standing above them.
