ROSEMONT, Ill. (Interstat) — The Chicago Sky host the Connecticut Sun on Thursday at Allstate Arena in a matchup of two teams fighting to climb out of the bottom of the WNBA standings. Chicago (9-18) sits just ahead of Connecticut (7-20) in the league hierarchy, but a win Thursday would give the Sky a crucial tiebreaker edge and keep their postseason hopes alive. The teams have split their season series, with Chicago winning 85-80 on June 5 in Connecticut before the Sun routed the Sky 92-63 on June 22 in Chicago. Both clubs enter on losing streaks. Connecticut allowed a season-high 123 points in a 123-88 loss at Indiana on July 22, its most lopsided defeat of the year. The Sun have lost seven of their last 10 games. Chicago fell 95-94 at New York on July 22, a heartbreaker decided in the final seconds, and have dropped four of their last five. For the Sun, forward Aneesah Morrow is a player to watch after bouncing back from a quiet outing earlier in July. Morrow played 21 minutes against Indiana on July 22 and posted 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists. That performance followed a 4-minute cameo against Dallas on July 2 in which she managed just three points and one rebound. Connecticut needs Morrow’s rebounding and interior presence against a Chicago frontcourt that features Azura Stevens and Kamilla Cardoso. Chicago’s Sydney Taylor has been the league’s hottest scorer in recent weeks. The guard has averaged 19.4 points over her last seven games, shooting with remarkable efficiency. She erupted for 31 points, three rebounds and three assists in the loss to New York, and scored 18 points against Atlanta on July 19. Taylor’s 3-point shooting and ability to create off the dribble will stress a Connecticut defense that allowed Indiana to shoot 55.4% from the floor in their last outing. The Sky have shown resilience in close games, with five of their last seven contests decided by single digits. Connecticut has struggled to close games, going 2-8 in such situations this season.
