PREVIEW: WASHINGTON MYSTICS VS. PORTLAND FIRE WASHINGTON (Interstat) — The Washington Mystics and Portland Fire meet Thursday at CareFirst Arena in a rematch of a four-overtime thriller that marked the highest-scoring game of the WNBA season. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EDT. Washington (11-10) aims to build on a 84-79 win over Seattle on Sunday, while Portland (10-14) seeks to snap a two-game skid after a 90-87 loss at Connecticut on Tuesday. The teams last met June 28, when Washington edged Portland 124-123 in quadruple overtime (Interstat) — a game that saw both teams combine for 247 points. Mystics center Shakira Austin has been on an offensive tear. The veteran posted 27 points, five rebounds and three assists in Sunday’s win over the Storm. Over her past five games, Austin is averaging 15.2 points and 10.6 rebounds while shooting above 50 percent from the field. Her interior presence will be critical against a Portland frontcourt that allowed 90 points to Connecticut on Tuesday. Portland forward Emily Engstler has been the Fire’s most consistent performer. She recorded 14 points, five rebounds and seven assists against Connecticut, following a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds in a 102-92 victory at Atlanta on July 11. Engstler has scored in double figures in four of her past five games and has logged at least 22 minutes in every contest since June 24. The Fire have struggled on the road, dropping seven of their past nine away from home. Portland’s defense has allowed 100 or more points three times in its last six outings. Washington, meanwhile, has won four of its past six and holds a 7-3 record at CareFirst Arena. The Mystics will look to exploit Portland’s turnover-prone offense. The Fire rank near the bottom of the league in assist-to-turnover ratio, while Washington forces an average of 14.5 turnovers per game. Washington guard Sonia Citron contributed 19 points, four rebounds and one assist against Seattle, and forward Kiki Iriafen posted 12 points and 13 rebounds. Portland guard Carla Leite added 18 points and six assists in Tuesday’s loss. According to Interstat’s game simulator, the Mystics are projected to win 93-90. Both teams begin demanding stretches after Thursday. Portland embarks on a five-game road trip starting Saturday at Minnesota, while Washington plays three of its next four on the West Coast.
