PREVIEW: WNBA (Interstat) — New York Liberty at Golden State Valkyries SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The New York Liberty visit the Golden State Valkyries on Sunday, June 28, in a pivotal WNBA showdown at Chase Center, with both teams jockeying for position near the top of the standings. New York enters with a 12-7 record, while Golden State sits at 11-7. The Valkyries won the most recent meeting between the teams, 87-70 on May 21 in New York. The Liberty are coming off a 99-88 loss Thursday at Seattle, a game in which center Jonquel Jones posted 26 points, eight rebounds and one block in 30 minutes. Jones has been a consistent force for New York, averaging 17.6 points and 8.9 rebounds over her last eight games. In that stretch, she recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Washington (June 14), 22 points and 17 rebounds in a victory over Toronto (June 3), and has notched at least eight rebounds in five of those outings. New York has won six of its last 10 games. Guard Sabrina Ionescu contributed 14 points, two rebounds and five assists in the loss to Seattle. Forward Leonie Fiebich added 19 points and two boards. For Golden State, forward Gabby Williams has been the catalyst. She scored 23 points with five rebounds and five assists in the Valkyries’ 77-66 win Wednesday over Atlanta. Williams is averaging 18.7 points over her last three games and has scored 19 or more in five of her past eight contests, including a 25-point, four-rebound effort in a win over Dallas (June 17) and a 27-point, six-rebound performance in a loss to Las Vegas (June 6). Golden State has won three of its last four. Guard Veronica Burton had eight points, five rebounds and seven assists in the win over Atlanta, and forward Kayla Thornton contributed 17 points and five rebounds. The Valkyries have been strong at home, while New York looks to rebound after splitting its last four road games. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 94-83 victory for Golden State. Following Sunday’s game, New York returns home to host Minnesota on July 3, then travels to face Dallas, Toronto, Indiana and Los Angeles. Golden State hits the road for four consecutive games starting July 4 at Atlanta. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern.
