SEATTLE (Interstat) — The Golden State Valkyries visit the Seattle Storm on Friday night at Key Arena, with both teams heading in opposite directions in the early WNBA season. Golden State (7-5) sits above .500 and will aim for a season sweep of Seattle after a 91-80 victory on May 8. The Valkyries come in with momentum from a 87-81 home win Tuesday over the Phoenix Mercury, improving to 4-2 in their last six games. Veronica Burton has been the engine for Golden State’s recent surge. The guard has averaged 14.3 points and 5.0 assists over her past six appearances, highlighted by a 25-point, eight-assist performance against Phoenix on Tuesday. In that contest, Burton logged 37 minutes and knocked down key shots in the fourth quarter to seal the win. She has topped 20 points twice in the last two weeks, also dropping 25 points with six rebounds and three assists in a 90-88 win over Indiana on May 28. The Valkyries have scored at least 87 points in four of their last six games, including a 95-77 rout of Portland on June 2. Gabby Williams matched Burton’s 25 points in the win over Phoenix, and Kayla Thornton added 12 points and four rebounds. Seattle (3-10) has lost six straight and seven of eight after a 101-91 defeat Monday at Las Vegas. The Storm’s only win since mid-May came on May 24 against Washington, 97-85. Their offensive struggles have been pronounced: Seattle has averaged just 71.2 points per game during the losing streak and has failed to reach 80 points in seven of their last eight contests. Guard Natisha Hiedeman has been a bright spot for Seattle. She posted 17 points, five rebounds and five assists against Las Vegas on Monday, and has scored at least 11 points in each of her past five games. Hiedeman averaged 17.4 points during that stretch, hitting 24 points in the victory over Washington on May 24. She also recorded 20 points in a narrow 80-78 loss to Connecticut on May 20. The Storm have struggled defensively, allowing 92.6 points per game during their current losing streak. They have given up at least 88 points in five consecutive outings. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 99-94 victory for Golden State. Tipoff is at 10 p.m. Eastern.
