SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The Golden State Valkyries look to build on a strong head-to-head record when they host the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday at Chase Center in a WNBA matchup of teams heading in opposite directions. Golden State (6-5) defeated Phoenix 95-79 on May 10 in their only previous meeting this season. The Valkyries have won four of their last six games, though they enter Tuesday’s contest following a 84-79 loss at Las Vegas on Saturday. Phoenix (4-8) has lost six of its last seven, but the Mercury are coming off a 78-72 victory at Portland on Friday. Forward Gabby Williams will be a player to watch for the Valkyries. She posted 27 points, six rebounds and one assist in 28 minutes against the Aces, and has scored at least 15 points in four of her last five games. Williams is averaging 19.2 points over her past six outings. DeWanna Bonner leads the Mercury attack. The veteran forward logged 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and three blocks in 34 minutes against Portland. However, Bonner has been inconsistent, scoring in single digits in four of her previous six games, including just two points against Minnesota on June 1. Phoenix will likely need more production from its supporting cast. Forward Natasha Mack contributed 16 points and four rebounds in the win at Portland, while guard Monique Akoa Makani added 11 points. The Mercury have struggled offensively, averaging 68.8 points over their last four losses. Golden State continues to get balanced contributions. Forward Kayla Thornton had 10 points and nine rebounds against Las Vegas, and guard Veronica Burton scored 15 points. The Valkyries have won three of four home games this season. Phoenix’s recent road struggles are a concern. The Mercury have lost five straight away from home, including a 111-77 drubbing at Minnesota on June 1. The Interstat game simulator projects a 94-84 win for Golden State. Tuesday’s game is the first of a two-game road trip for Phoenix, which visits Dallas on Thursday. Golden State begins a three-game road trip Friday at Seattle.
