PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The Connecticut Sun will try to halt a season spiraling toward irrelevance when they face the Portland Fire on Wednesday at Moda Center. Connecticut (1-7) has lost six of its past seven games, including a 97-70 blowout at Golden State on Monday. The Sun have not won a road game this season. Portland (4-3) has won two straight, most recently an 81-74 victory at New York on Monday. The Fire have split their four home games. Aneesah Morrow has been a rare bright spot for Connecticut. The forward recorded a double-double in Monday’s loss, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes. In the teams’ most recent meeting on May 18 — an 83-82 Portland win — Morrow logged 12 points and 12 rebounds in 34 minutes. She has posted at least 10 rebounds in three of her past four games. Emily Engstler provides a similar inside-outside threat for Portland. The forward had eight points, five rebounds and four blocked shots in Monday’s win over New York. In the May 18 victory against Connecticut, Engstler scored 15 points and added three rebounds, two assists and a block. Portland guard Carla Leite has been productive off the bench, scoring 18 points against Toronto on Saturday and 22 points against New York on Monday. The Sun have struggled on both ends of the floor. They rank near the bottom of the WNBA in scoring offense (74.6 points per game) and defensive efficiency, allowing 91.4 points per contest. Connecticut has lost its past five games by an average of 15.8 points. Portland’s offense has been more balanced. The Fire have scored at least 81 points in four of their past five games. Wednesday’s game is the third meeting between the teams this season. Portland has won both previous matchups, including a 98-96 victory in the season opener. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 104-102 Connecticut win, though oddsmakers have made Portland a 4.5-point favorite. The over/under is 169.5 points. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PDT. Connecticut returns home Saturday to face Los Angeles. Portland hosts Atlanta on Friday.
