LAS VEGAS (Interstat) — The Chicago Sky, unbeaten in their season opener, face the Phoenix Mercury on Friday night at Michelob Ultra Arena in a neutral-site WNBA matchup. Chicago (1-0) enters the 7 p.m. PDT contest riding momentum from a 98-83 victory Saturday at Portland. Skylar Diggins posted a near triple-double in that win, finishing with 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists over 33 minutes. The guard also added two blocks. Kamilla Cardoso contributed 22 points and 14 rebounds, while Jacy Sheldon added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. Phoenix (1-2) looks to snap a two-game losing streak after dropping consecutive decisions to Golden State and Minnesota. The Mercury most recently fell 88-84 at home Tuesday against the Lynx. Kahleah Copper led Phoenix with 30 points on 35 minutes, though she grabbed just one rebound and dished two assists. DeWanna Bonner added 16 points and seven rebounds, and Natasha Mack posted nine points and 10 rebounds with three blocks. The Mercury opened the season with a 99-66 blowout victory May 9 at Las Vegas before falling 95-79 on the road against Golden State. Friday’s game features a compelling backcourt matchup between Diggins and Copper. Diggins has demonstrated her ability to impact the game beyond scoring, as shown by her 11-rebound, seven-assist performance in Chicago’s lone contest. Copper, meanwhile, has been the Mercury’s primary offensive weapon, averaging 18.0 points through three games. Her 30-point outburst against Minnesota underscored her scoring capability, but Phoenix will need contributions from Bonner and Mack to keep pace with a balanced Chicago attack. The Sky, who do not play again until Saturday at Minnesota, will aim to build on their early momentum. The Mercury, seeking to return to .500, face Toronto at home Tuesday.
