PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The New York Liberty, off to a 2-0 start, visit the Portland Fire on Thursday night at Moda Center in a WNBA matchup pitting an early-season league power against a team searching for its first victory. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time. New York (2-0) opened the season with a 106-75 rout of Connecticut on May 8, then outlasted Washington 98-93 in overtime on May 10. The Liberty have not lost a game in any competition this season, and they have a key contributor fueling that fast start. Forward Breanna Stewart has posted back-to-back double-doubles. She scored 31 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished two assists and blocked three shots in the win over the Sun. In the overtime victory against the Mystics, Stewart logged 39 minutes, scoring 23 points with nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks. The two-time league MVP is averaging 27 points and 9.5 rebounds this season. The Liberty also got strong production from guard Marine Johannes (25 points, one rebound, two assists) and guard Pauline Astier (18 points, five rebounds, seven assists) in the Washington game. Portland (0-1) lost its season opener 98-83 on Saturday at home against Chicago. The Fire have not won a game in any competition this season, and they have had an extended break since that defeat to prepare for the Liberty. Guard Carla Leite led Portland in the loss, scoring 18 points with three rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes. Guard Sarah Ashlee Barker added 13 points, four rebounds and one block, and center Luisa Geiselsoder chipped in eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. The Fire have not yet faced New York in regular-season play this year. The two teams have two games scheduled in a five-day span later this month, with the Liberty visiting Portland again Thursday before the Fire travel to New York on May 25. The Liberty will look to stay undefeated against a Portland team seeking its first win. New York’s next opponent after Thursday will be the Golden State Valkyries at home on May 21. Portland’s next game after Thursday is at home against Connecticut on May 18.
