PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks will try to keep their late-season push going Saturday when they host the Cincinnati Reds at Chase Field. Arizona (68-61) opened the four-game series with a 9-0 rout Friday. Eduardo Rodriguez, a player to watch for the Diamondbacks, delivered 5 2/3 scoreless innings and earned the win. Jordan Lawlar went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs. Arizona has won three of four against Cincinnati this season, including two of three in June. Cincinnati (61-68) will start right-hander Michael Soroka (8-3). The Reds have lost two straight and seven of their last nine. They managed only four hits in Friday’s shutout loss, continuing a rough stretch in which scoring has been inconsistent. Reds reliever Julian Garcia is another player to watch. Garcia worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings Friday and has not allowed an earned run in his last three appearances, covering 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four in that span. Arizona has won its last two games, including a 7-6, 10-inning victory at Boston on Wednesday. The Diamondbacks have been sharp behind Rodriguez, who has won his past two starts, though he pitched Friday and will not start again on normal rest. Soroka will face an Arizona lineup that has shown power and patience. The Diamondbacks have scored at least six runs in three of their past five games. Cincinnati’s bullpen, which has relied on Garcia among others, allowed three earned runs in Friday’s loss after the starter departed. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Arizona victory. Interstat’s ELO system gives the Diamondbacks a 59.90 percent probability to win. Arizona is listed as a 1 1/2-run favorite, and the over/under is 8. The Reds will need Soroka to give them length after their bullpen has been taxed recently. Cincinnati also needs more from its offense, which has scored one run or none in three of its last six games. The teams continue the series Sunday before the Reds travel to San Francisco. Arizona, meanwhile, is looking to build momentum in the NL wild-card race. With Lawlar contributing from the top of the order and Rodriguez setting the tone on the mound, the Diamondbacks enter Saturday’s matchup as the hotter team. For Cincinnati, Saturday represents a chance to stop its slide and even the series. Soroka’s season record suggests he has been reliable, but he will need run support against an Arizona team that has dominated the season series to this point.
