WASHINGTON (Interstat) — Cade Cavalli tossed eight innings of one-hit shutout baseball, and the Washington Nationals defeated the Chicago Cubs 7-0 on Thursday night at Nationals Park. Cavalli struck out 10 and improved to 10-5. Abimelec Ortiz went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. Dylan Crews and Daylen Lile each contributed two hits and one RBI. Jorbit Vivas added an RBI single. Washington scored once in the fourth, five times in the fifth and once in the eighth. Kevin Gausman (6-11) took the loss, allowing six earned runs over 4 2/3 innings. Aaron Civale worked 3 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one earned run and striking out one. Clayton Beeter pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout. The Nationals finished with 10 hits, while the Cubs managed one. Attendance was 21,463, and the game lasted 2 hours 20 minutes. Washington improved to 60-63 and avoided a sweep in the three-game series. Chicago dropped to 73-52.
