MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Interstat) — The Los Angeles Angels open a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park on Friday, Aug. 7, looking to build on a rare victory. The forecast at first pitch calls for 82 degrees and cloudy skies. The Angels (44-71) beat Baltimore 4-1 on Thursday. Right-hander Ryan Johnson earned the win, allowing one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings. Shortstop Zach Neto went 2 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs, and Samy Natera Jr. pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. The win snapped a five-game losing streak. Johnson’s recent starts have been uneven. He allowed one earned run in five innings against Detroit on July 19, then gave up eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings at San Francisco on July 25. He allowed five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings against Milwaukee on July 31, then beat Baltimore. At Minnesota on July 11, he allowed three earned runs in five innings. The Marlins (58-57) counter with right-hander Eury Pérez. Miami lost 4-1 at Atlanta on Wednesday, and Pérez took the loss despite allowing four runs in five innings with nine strikeouts. Cade Gibson and Calvin Faucher each followed with a scoreless inning. Pérez has been effective recently but has received little support. The Marlins are 0-5 in his last five starts. He allowed one earned run in six innings at New York on July 30, no earned runs in six innings at Milwaukee on July 19, and two earned runs in six innings against Cleveland on July 11.
