KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — The Chicago Cubs will attempt to extend their winning streak to five games Friday when they open a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. The forecast at first pitch is 77 degrees and cloudy. Chicago (67-49) has won four consecutive games and eight of its last 11. During a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Cubs outscored the Dodgers 22-12, then edged Toronto 3-2 in 11 innings Thursday. Alex Bregman went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, and Aaron Civale pitched three innings of relief, allowing one earned run. A player to watch for Chicago is left-hander David Peterson, who has won four straight starts. On Thursday, he allowed one earned run in five innings against Toronto with three strikeouts. He gave up one earned run in 6 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts against the New York Yankees on Aug. 1, two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings at St. Louis on July 27 and no earned runs in 6 2/3 innings against Detroit on July 21. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his last four outings. Kansas City (48-68) has lost five of its last six. The Royals won the first two games of a series against Minnesota before falling 4-3 Thursday. A player to watch for Kansas City is right-hander Michael Wacha, who took the loss despite allowing one earned run in 5 2/3 innings. Wacha has a 1.82 ERA over his past four starts, and he allowed one earned run in six innings at Colorado on July 31, two in seven innings at Detroit on July 25 and one in six innings against San Francisco on July 20. Alex Lange and Easton McGee each pitched a scoreless inning Thursday. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-5 Cubs victory. Interstat’s ELO system gives the Cubs a 61.70 percent probability to win. The Cubs are 1.5-run favorites, and the over/under is 10 runs. The series continues Saturday and Sunday at Kauffman. Chicago then plays three games at Washington before returning home to host St. Louis. Kansas City will play three at the Los Angeles Dodgers and three at the Los Angeles Angels before returning home to face the Athletics.
