PHOENIX (Interstat) — The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres meet Wednesday at Chase Field in the third game of their four-game series, with the Diamondbacks trying to build on their lead in the NL West. Arizona enters with a 60-53 record, two games ahead of San Diego (58-55). The Diamondbacks took the opener Monday 5-1. San Diego had won three straight before that loss. Mitch Bratt gets the start for the Padres, entering with an 0-1 record. He will oppose Arizona right-hander Brandon Pfaadt, who has been one of the hottest pitchers in the National League. Pfaadt has won his last five starts, including Monday’s series opener against San Diego. In that game, he allowed five hits and no earned runs over 6 2/3 innings, striking out three. Pfaadt also is Arizona’s player to watch. He has worked at least five innings in each of his last five starts and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in every one. His recent stretch includes wins over Pittsburgh, St. Louis and the Los Angeles Dodgers. For San Diego, the player to watch is Michael King, although he is not scheduled to start Wednesday. King started Monday’s 5-1 loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits in five innings while striking out five. He has pitched at least five innings in each of his last five outings. In two starts against Arizona this season, King allowed four earned runs over 11 innings, a 3.27 ERA. He earned a win against the Diamondbacks on July 8, when he allowed one run over six innings in San Diego’s 10-4 victory. Arizona leads the season series 4-3. In Monday’s win, Tim Tawa went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, and reliever Juan Morillo struck out two in 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 San Diego victory, suggesting another tight matchup. The teams close the series Thursday at Chase Field before San Diego heads home to face Houston and Arizona hosts Los Angeles.
