PHOENIX (Interstat) — The San Diego Padres try to avoid a third straight loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night at Chase Field, with right-hander Michael King scheduled to face Arizona right-hander Brandon Pfaadt in the middle game of a four-game series. San Diego enters with a 58-55 record, while Arizona is 60-53. The Diamondbacks won Monday’s opener 5-1, taking a 4-3 lead in the season series. Arizona also won July 9, July 6 and April 26 in the matchup. San Diego’s wins came July 8, July 7 and April 25. King is coming off a loss in the series opener, allowing five hits and three earned runs over five innings with five strikeouts. In his previous start against Arizona on July 8, he earned a win, throwing six innings and allowing four hits, one earned run and four strikeouts. He also pitched well in losses at Atlanta on July 22 and at Kansas City on July 17, allowing one earned run in each outing while lasting six and five innings, respectively. Pfaadt has won five consecutive starts. He shut out San Diego over 6 2/3 innings on Monday, scattering five hits with three strikeouts. He also threw seven scoreless innings at Pittsburgh on July 28 and allowed two earned runs over six innings at St. Louis on July 23. Over his past five starts, Pfaadt has been Arizona’s most consistent starter. Monday’s game also featured Tim Tawa, who went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs for Arizona. Juan Morillo pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. For San Diego, Yuki Matsui allowed one hit in 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Jeremiah Estrada recorded the final two outs without allowing a run. The Padres bring some recent momentum after winning three straight against San Francisco from July 31 through Aug. 2, then splitting a four-game series with the Giants before taking two of three from Colorado. Arizona won three straight at Cleveland from July 31 through Aug. 1, then lost the series finale to the Guardians 5-0 on Sunday. Before that, the Diamondbacks took two of three at Pittsburgh.
