KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — The Minnesota Twins try to snap a two-game losing streak Tuesday night when they open a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Minnesota (56-57) enters after a 7-6 loss at Seattle on Sunday. Kansas City (46-67) has lost three straight following Sunday’s 8-1 defeat at Colorado. The Twins won two of three against the Royals in Minneapolis on July 28-30, taking games July 28 and July 30 while dropping July 29. Tuesday’s forecast calls for 82 degrees and cloudy skies. Twins third baseman Royce Lewis is a player to watch. In Sunday’s loss at Seattle, Lewis went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Over his past three games, he has two homers and four RBIs, including a solo shot Friday at Seattle. Lewis also had a key pinch-hit appearance against the Royals on July 28, going 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Royals right-hander Steven Cruz has been reliable out of the bullpen. He threw a scoreless inning with one strikeout Sunday at Colorado and has not allowed an earned run in four consecutive appearances. Over his past 10 outings, Cruz has pitched 9 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs, a 1.86 ERA. He has struck out seven in that span. The Royals have struggled overall, but Cruz has emerged as a steady option in a bullpen that has had its share of inconsistency. He also pitched a scoreless inning in Kansas City’s 4-0 win at Minnesota on July 29. Minnesota’s recent head-to-head success includes a 4-3 win over Kansas City on July 30. In that game, Lewis went 1-for-4 with a run scored, and the Twins rallied for the series victory. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-3 Twins victory. Interstat’s ELO system gives Minnesota a 50.30 percent probability to win. Minnesota is a -1.5 run-line favorite, and the over-under is 8.5. The Twins have shown offensive pop but have been inconsistent. Lewis has provided a spark atop their lineup, and they will need more of that production at the plate against a Royals pitching staff that has struggled to contain opponents. Kansas City, meanwhile, needs better starts from its rotation and more timely hitting to avoid falling further in the American League Central. The series continues Wednesday and Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. Minnesota then travels to Milwaukee for a three-game weekend set, while Kansas City hosts the Chicago Cubs for three games beginning Friday.
