SEATTLE (Interstat) — The Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners open a three-game series Tuesday at T-Mobile Park with both teams sitting at 55-58, three games under .500. Right-hander Keider Montero is scheduled to start for Detroit against Seattle right-hander George Kirby in a matchup of pitchers coming off strong outings. First pitch is set for 73 degrees and clear. Montero earned a win Aug. 2 at Oakland, allowing two hits and no earned runs over six innings with two strikeouts in the Tigers’ 11-0 victory. He has been inconsistent since the All-Star break, but he has allowed one earned run or fewer in three of his past six appearances. In his previous start July 27 against Baltimore, he gave up nine hits and four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Kirby blanked Minnesota over seven innings Sunday in Seattle’s 7-6 win, allowing five hits and striking out three. He has been sharp at home, but he was roughed up July 27 at Texas, yielding seven earned runs over four innings. Kirby also threw six scoreless innings against Cincinnati on July 20. The teams last met June 5-7 in Detroit, where the Tigers won two of three. Seattle’s only victory in that series came June 6 by a 4-0 score. Detroit carries a three-game winning streak into the series after sweeping on the road. In Sunday’s win, catcher Eduardo Valencia went 2 for 5 with four RBIs, first baseman Spencer Torkelson went 2 for 5 with three RBIs, and Montero got the win. The Tigers have scored 32 runs during their winning streak. Seattle has won two straight after taking the final two games against Minnesota. Catcher Cal Raleigh drove in three runs in Sunday’s win with a home run, and first baseman Josh Naylor added two RBIs. The Mariners have alternated wins and losses over their past six games, but they are 6-4 in their last 10. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 final score in favor of Detroit. Interstat’s ELO system gives Seattle a 51.7 percent probability to win. Seattle is a minus 1.5 favorite on the run line, and the over/under is set at 8.5. The series continues Wednesday and Thursday with the same teams, both games in Seattle. Detroit then travels to San Francisco for a three-game series, while Seattle hosts Tampa Bay for three games starting Friday.
