TORONTO (Interstat) — The St. Louis Cardinals close out their three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays with a day-night doubleheader Sunday at Rogers Centre. Right-hander Michael McGreevy (4-9) is scheduled to start the opener for St. Louis, and right-hander Max Scherzer (1-4) is slated for the nightcap. Toronto had not announced its probable starters for either game. The Blue Jays have won the first two games of the series, beating St. Louis 3-1 on Friday and 5-1 on Saturday. St. Louis enters at 54-57; Toronto is 52-59. In Saturday’s 5-1 win, Toronto right-hander Kevin Gausman allowed one earned run over 5 2/3 innings, struck out four and earned the victory. George Springer went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Tyler Rogers pitched a scoreless inning. For St. Louis, Quinn Mathews took the loss despite allowing two earned runs in five innings, striking out three. Peter Strzelecki gave up one hit in 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and Masyn Winn drove in the Cardinals’ run. Mathews, a left-hander, remains a bright spot for St. Louis and one of its young players to watch. Gausman, Toronto’s veteran right-hander, also bears watching: He won Saturday, allowed three runs in six innings in a July 26 loss at Boston, but was tagged for four runs in 3 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay on July 21. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-3 Toronto victory and gives the Blue Jays a 57.1 percent chance to win. The Cardinals, though, are listed as 1 1/2-run favorites on the betting line, with an over/under of 9 runs. Both teams hit the road Monday after Sunday’s twin bill. St. Louis opens a three-game series at Yankee Stadium, while Toronto begins a three-game set at Houston.
