SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The San Diego Padres try to extend their series lead over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday evening at PETCO Park. The game-time forecast calls for cloudy skies and a temperature of 84 degrees. San Diego enters at 57-54, while San Francisco is 47-64. The Padres have won two of the first three games of the four-game set, including a 6-5 walk-off-style thriller Saturday and a 7-0 shutout Friday. San Francisco won Thursday’s opener 4-1. The Giants will start right-hander Michael King, who is 6-7 this season. King will need help from a lineup that has produced little outside of Osleivis Basabe in this series. Basabe starred in Saturday’s 6-5 loss, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. He was 0-for-1 in Friday’s game and 0-for-1 in his previous appearance Wednesday against Milwaukee. For San Diego, catcher Freddy Fermin has been the key bat. Fermin went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in Saturday’s win. He also singled Friday in the Padres’ 7-0 victory. Over his past nine games, Fermin has collected at least one hit in seven of them. The teams have split their season series narrowly. San Diego has won five of nine meetings against San Francisco this year. The Padres took two of three in an April series at Petco Park, while the Giants won two of three in San Francisco in early May. The Padres hold a 2-1 edge in the current series. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 Padres win, and Interstat’s ELO system gives San Diego a 58.80 percent probability to win. San Diego is a -1.5 run-line favorite, with the over/under set at 8. The Giants will open a three-game road trip Monday in Texas against the Rangers, while the Padres begin a four-game series Monday at Arizona. Before that, San Francisco will try to even this series behind King, while San Diego looks to claim the season set and build momentum in its push for the postseason.
