RED SOX AT ATHLETICS WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Boston Red Sox and Athletics conclude their four-game series Thursday night at Sutter Health Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7:07 p.m. Boston (55-51) enters the finale having split the first two games of the series, winning 4-2 on Monday before falling 4-3 on Tuesday. Wednesday’s game was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up as part of a doubleheader at a later date. The Athletics (45-62) hold a 2-1 edge in the season series and have won five of the past seven meetings between the clubs. Right-hander Jake Bennett (4-1, 3.07 ERA) will start for Boston. The 26-year-old has been dominant over his past four outings, posting a 1.06 ERA with 17 strikeouts across 25 2/3 innings. In his most recent start Tuesday against these same Athletics, Bennett took the loss despite allowing three earned runs over 6 1/3 innings in a 4-3 defeat. He had previously thrown three consecutive quality starts without permitting an earned run, including a seven-inning shutout performance July 8 at Chicago. Left-hander Gage Jump (3-8, 5.40 ERA) will counter for Oakland. Jump earned a victory against Boston on Tuesday, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing three hits and striking out seven. That performance was a sharp reversal from his previous two starts, in which he surrendered a combined 12 earned runs over 7 1/3 innings. Boston is 5-5 over its past 10 games. The Red Sox have been productive offensively during the series, scoring seven runs across the two completed games. Catcher Connor Wong provided the key hit in Monday’s victory with a two-run homer. Athletics first baseman Brian Serven homered and drove in two runs in Tuesday’s win. The Interstat game simulator projects an 8-3 Boston victory. The Red Sox are installed as a minus-1.5 run-line favorite, with the over/under set at 10.5 total runs. Following Thursday’s game, Boston travels to Los Angeles for a three-game series against the Dodgers beginning Friday. The Athletics return home to host Detroit in a three-game set starting Friday. The teams will meet again Aug. 7-9 at Fenway Park.
