WASHINGTON (Interstat) — The Washington Nationals and Toronto Blue Jays meet Wednesday evening at Nationals Park for the rubber match of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled under partly cloudy skies with a game-time temperature of 87 degrees. The Nationals enter play at 54-53, three games above .500, while the Blue Jays are 49-58, nine games under .500. Washington evened the series with a 2-0 win Tuesday after Toronto took Monday’s opener 3-2. The Nationals have won six of their last 10; Toronto has gone 4-6 in that span. Left-hander Mason Fluharty is a reliever to watch for Toronto. He earned the win Monday, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings with no hits and one strikeout. Over his last eight appearances dating to July 5, Fluharty has allowed one earned run in 8 2/3 innings — a 1.04 ERA — with nine strikeouts. He has held opponents scoreless in six of those eight outings. Left-hander Andrew Alvarez will start for Washington. In his only appearance against Toronto this season, Monday, he took a no-decision after allowing one run on four hits over 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Alvarez has been uneven: He threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings July 1 at Boston, striking out six, but allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings July 7 against Houston. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-4 Washington victory, yet Toronto is installed as a -1.5 favorite on the run line. The over/under is 9.5 runs. After Wednesday, the Nationals travel to Atlanta for four games against the Braves starting Thursday. The Blue Jays return home to host St. Louis for three games beginning Friday before a six-game road trip to Houston and Chicago.
