Preview: Red Sox at Athletics WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Boston Red Sox look to build on their series-opening win when they face the Athletics on Wednesday at Sutter Health Park. Boston (55-50) took the first game of the four-game set 4-2 on Monday, with right-hander Payton Tolle earning the win. The Red Sox have won four of their last five games overall. The Athletics (44-62) have lost three straight and six of their last seven. Tolle, scheduled to start Wednesday, is 4-0 with a 2.91 ERA over his last five outings. On Monday, he allowed two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. He has 34 strikeouts over 23 2/3 innings in that span, with his only rough start coming July 1 against Washington, when he allowed six runs in three innings. Athletics right-hander Jack Perkins will oppose him. Perkins took the loss Monday despite allowing just one hit and two runs (both earned) with four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. He has lost all four of his July starts, with a 6.23 ERA for the month. Opponents are hitting .303 against him in that stretch. Boston’s offense was led Monday by center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela, who hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs. Reliever Aroldis Chapman struck out three in a scoreless ninth for the save. The Athletics got a solo home run from designated hitter Tyler Soderstrom in Monday’s loss. Reliever Hogan Harris pitched a scoreless inning. Boston holds a 2-0 lead in the season series entering Wednesday’s game. The Interstat game simulator projects an 8-3 Red Sox victory. Boston is a minus-1.5 favorite, and the over/under is 10. Following Wednesday’s game, Boston travels to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers for a three-game series starting Friday. The Athletics return home to host Detroit for a three-game weekend set.
