DETROIT (Interstat) — The Kansas City Royals try to build on a narrow Saturday victory when they face the Detroit Tigers in the finale of a four-game series Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park. Left-hander Framber Valdez (5-7) is scheduled to start for Kansas City, which is 44-62. Detroit had not named a starter for Sunday. The Tigers are 50-55. The Royals won 3-2 on Saturday to even the series after dropping the first two games. Detroit won 2-1 on Friday and 4-3 on Thursday. The clubs have split eight meetings this season, with the home team winning each of the past six. The forecast calls for 83-degree temperatures with clouds. Royals right-hander Michael Wacha is a player to watch. He pitched seven innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts in Saturday’s win. Wacha also earned a win July 20 against San Francisco, tossing six innings and allowing one earned run. Tigers right-hander Casey Mize is a player to watch for Detroit. He took the loss Saturday despite allowing one earned run over six innings on three hits with three strikeouts. In a June 29 start at the New York Yankees, Mize pitched seven innings of one-hit shutout ball with 10 strikeouts. Valdez has struggled recently. In his last three starts, he has allowed 13 earned runs over 15 2/3 innings and has not won since July 1. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 Detroit victory. Kansas City travels to Minnesota for a three-game series starting Tuesday. Detroit opens a three-game home series Monday against Baltimore.
