DETROIT (Interstat) — The Detroit Tigers welcome the Kansas City Royals to Comerica Park on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. for a four-game series opener. First pitch is set for 74 degrees with cloudy skies. Detroit (47-54) enters as a -1.5 favorite per Interstat, which projects a 5-4 Tigers victory. The over/under is 8 runs. The Tigers have won four of six meetings this season, including a 6-3 decision May 10 in Kansas City. Right-hander Seth Lugo is expected to start for Kansas City (43-60). Lugo earned a win Wednesday against San Francisco, tossing 7 innings and allowing three earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Over his past seven starts, Lugo has four wins but has been inconsistent, surrendering six earned runs in 4.1 innings July 7 at the New York Mets. The Royals, losers of seven of their past 10, dropped two of three to the Giants before Lugo’s outing. Catcher/designated hitter Dillon Dingler leads a Detroit offense that has won seven of its past 10. Dingler went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs in Tuesday’s 11-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs. He is 7 for his past 18 with three home runs and five RBIs over his last five games. The Tigers are coming off a series split at Chicago. The series continues Friday through Sunday before Kansas City travels to Minnesota and Detroit hosts Baltimore.
