BOSTON (Interstat) — The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox, separated by a single game in the American League East standings, open a pivotal three-game series Monday night at Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. under clear skies with a temperature of 72 degrees. Baltimore (49-51) arrives having won five straight, including a 5-2 victory Sunday at Houston behind right-hander Brandon Young. The Orioles took three of four from the Astros to climb within a game of .500 for the first time since late June. Young (7-6, 3.82 ERA) will start for Baltimore. The right-hander has been dominant in his past two outings, pitching seven innings in each and allowing one earned run while striking out seven in both starts. Baltimore took two of three in Boston from June 2-4, winning the most recent meeting 8-2. The Red Sox won two of three in Baltimore from April 24-26, including a 17-1 rout. Third baseman Coby Mayo has been a key contributor for Baltimore, homering Sunday against Houston. Left-hander Grant Wolfram has been effective out of the bullpen, tossing a scoreless inning Sunday. Catcher Willson Contreras homered and drove in two runs for Boston on Sunday, while right-hander Ryan Watson struck out two in a scoreless inning. Boston enters as a -1.5 favorite, according to Interstat’s game simulator, which projects a 7-6 final. The over/under is 8.5. The series continues Tuesday and Wednesday before both teams head on the road. Baltimore travels to Detroit for a three-game set, while Boston visits the Athletics for a four-game series.
