TORONTO (Interstat) — The Chicago White Sox open a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon at Rogers Centre, with right-hander Davis Martin (9-3) scheduled to start for the visiting team. The White Sox (50-45) have won four straight meetings with the Blue Jays (45-51), including a 5-1 victory Friday. Chicago also took three games in April at home, outscoring Toronto 14-7 in that series. Martin has been a bright spot for Chicago’s rotation, posting a 2.76 ERA over his last seven starts. He will face a Toronto lineup that has struggled for consistency, averaging 3.4 runs per game over its past 10 contests. The Blue Jays counter with right-hander Kevin Gausman, who has allowed 13 earned runs over 23 1/3 innings across his last four outings, all losses. Gausman last pitched July 12 at San Diego, taking a 5-4 defeat despite striking out eight over six innings. Toronto’s offense has managed three runs or fewer in three of its last four games. A player to watch for Chicago is left-hander Noah Schultz, who has been effective out of the bullpen. Schultz worked five innings of one-run ball in a 9-1 win over Oakland on July 12, striking out four. Over his previous two appearances, however, Schultz allowed seven earned runs over 9 1/3 innings. For Toronto, Gausman remains a key figure despite his recent struggles. He has 27 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings over his past four starts, but has been hurt by the long ball, surrendering five home runs in that span. The White Sox enter on a hot streak, having won five of their last six games. Their offense exploded for 24 runs in a three-game sweep of the Athletics from July 10-12. Right fielder Braden Montgomery homered and drove in four runs in Sunday’s 9-1 victory. Toronto has lost four of its last five, including a pair of one-run defeats at San Diego on Friday and Saturday. Second baseman Ernie Clement homered and drove in two runs in Sunday’s 4-5 loss. The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-4 Blue Jays victory, but Chicago is a minus-1.5 run favorite. The over-under is 8.5 runs. After Saturday’s game, the White Sox travel to Texas for three games starting Monday, while the Blue Jays host Tampa Bay for a four-game set beginning Monday.
