DETROIT (Interstat) — Two teams with identical 41-50 records meet Thursday night at Comerica Park, where the Detroit Tigers seek a third straight win over the Athletics in a matchup of aces. Left-hander Tarik Skubal (10-6) takes the mound for Detroit at 7:10 p.m. EDT, facing Athletics right-hander J.T. Ginn (7-8) for the second time in a week. The forecast calls for 87-degree temperatures with clouds. Skubal dominated Oakland on Tuesday, allowing one earned run on five hits over five innings with nine strikeouts in a 6-2 victory. The Tigers ace has been sharp over his past five starts, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.95 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings. His lone hiccup came June 24 against the New York Yankees, when he surrendered four runs in six innings. Ginn struggled in the same game Tuesday, lasting just four innings while giving up two earned runs on two hits with four strikeouts. The right-hander has been inconsistent, allowing three or more earned runs in three of his past five outings. However, he showed his potential June 15 against Pittsburgh, tossing six shutout innings with three strikeouts in an 11-2 win. Detroit has won four of its past five games, including a series-opening 6-1 victory Wednesday. Colt Keith provided the offense Tuesday with a two-run home run, while Jacob Waguespack tossed two scoreless innings in relief. Oakland has dropped five straight and eight of its past nine. The Athletics managed just one win in their past 10 games, a 7-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 1. Henry Bolte homered in Tuesday’s loss. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-2 Tigers victory. Detroit is a -1.5 favorite, with the over/under set at 8.5. Following Thursday’s game, the Tigers host the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game series starting Friday. The Athletics travel to Chicago for a three-game set against the White Sox.
