TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays meet Wednesday night at George Steinbrenner Field for the rubber match of a three-game series, with first pitch set for 7:07 p.m. under clear skies and a temperature of 88 degrees. The American League East rivals enter the game separated by three games in the standings. Tampa Bay leads the division at 52-36, while the Yankees sit at 50-40. The Rays have won five of the seven meetings this season, including a 6-3 victory Tuesday after the Yankees took Monday’s series opener 5-1. Right-hander Cam Schlittler is expected to start for New York. In Monday’s win, Schlittler was outstanding, allowing one earned run on four hits over eight innings with eight strikeouts. He has been inconsistent this season, however, with a loss June 30 against Detroit (four innings, six earned runs) and a no-decision June 25 at Boston (five innings, zero earned runs, nine strikeouts). In five starts since June 13, he has two wins, two losses and a no-decision. Right-hander Griffin Jax will oppose him for Tampa Bay. Jax took the loss Monday despite striking out 10 over five innings, surrendering three earned runs on just one hit. He had won his previous two starts, including a scoreless five-inning outing against Kansas City on June 24. Over his last five starts, Jax has three wins, two losses and a 2.60 ERA. The Yankees are trying to build momentum after a rough stretch that saw them lose six of eight before Monday’s win. They dropped two of three to Minnesota and were swept in a three-game series by Detroit ending June 30. The Rays have won four of their last six after losing two of three at Houston last weekend. Tampa Bay’s offense has been productive, averaging 5.5 runs over its last six games. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-2 Rays victory. Tampa Bay is a -1.5 favorite on the run line, with the over/under set at seven. Both teams will finish the series Thursday before New York travels to Washington for a three-game set and Tampa Bay returns home to host Seattle.
