DENVER (Interstat) — The San Francisco Giants visit the Colorado Rockies on Saturday at Coors Field in a matchup of two teams trying to climb out of the National League basement. First pitch is set for 4:10 p.m. MDT on Independence Day. The Giants (36-50) hold a one-game edge over the Rockies (35-53) in the standings, but both clubs enter the game losers of 10 of their last 15. San Francisco will start right-hander Trevor McDonald, who is coming off his best outing of the season. On Wednesday at Arizona, McDonald threw six innings of one-hit ball, striking out five in a 6-4 win. The sharp performance broke a stretch of three consecutive losses in which McDonald had allowed 10 earned runs over 12 innings. McDonald has not faced Colorado this season. In his only career appearance at Coors Field, he allowed two runs over three innings in a 2024 start. Colorado counters with an offense that exploded for 14 runs Thursday in a win over Miami. Outfielder Jake McCarthy was the catalyst, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. McCarthy has been streaky, with four multi-hit games in his last eight starts but also three hitless outings over the same span. For the season, he is hitting .271 with 10 homers. Colorado won the first game of this four-game series — postponed from May 12 — on Friday by an 8-7 score in 10 innings. The teams also met in Denver from May 29-31, when the Giants won the finale 19-6 after the Rockies took the first two games 8-3 and 8-6. San Francisco was carried Wednesday by its bullpen, which allowed one run over the final three innings after McDonald’s exit. The Giants will play their next 10 games against Colorado and Toronto. Colorado’s bullpen has a 4.89 ERA at home, but the Rockies have won three of their last four games after losing eight of nine. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Giants win.
