DENVER (Interstat) — The San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies, two teams mired near the bottom of the National League West, open a three-game series Friday night at Coors Field. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. MDT. San Francisco (36-50) enters after a 6-4 win Wednesday at Arizona, snapping a two-game skid. Right-hander Trevor McDonald (3-4, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Giants. McDonald is coming off a strong outing, tossing six scoreless innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts against the Diamondbacks on July 1. The 24-year-old has been inconsistent this season, posting a 5.28 ERA over his previous four starts before that gem, but his July 1 performance offered a glimpse of his potential. Colorado (35-53) is coming off a 14-4 rout of Miami on Thursday, its second straight win after a five-game losing streak. The Rockies took two of three from the Marlins. Outfielder Jake McCarthy has been a key contributor, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in Thursday’s victory. Over his last five games, McCarthy is 6-for-18 with two home runs and eight RBIs. The Rockies have won the season series 2-1 so far, all in Denver from May 29-31. Colorado pounded San Francisco 8-3 and 8-6 in the first two games before the Giants answered with a 19-6 blowout on May 31. Coors Field has historically favored hitters, and both teams have struggled on the mound. The Giants have a 4.72 staff ERA, while the Rockies are at 5.41. San Francisco has lost seven of its last 10 games overall. The Giants are 17-25 on the road. Colorado is 19-23 at home. Players to Watch Giants: McDonald will look to build on his best start of the year. In two career appearances against Colorado, he is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA. Rockies: McCarthy is hitting .342 over his last seven games with nine RBIs. He is 3-for-11 (.273) with two RBIs in three games against San Francisco this season. Projection Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Giants victory.
