CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians, two teams separated by one game in the American League Central standings, open a pivotal four-game series Thursday at Progressive Field. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. EDT under clear skies with a forecast of 94 degrees. Chicago (45-40) holds a one-game lead over the Guardians (45-42) in the division race after winning two of three games in the teams’ previous series June 22-24 in Chicago. The White Sox are coming off a 6-1 loss at Baltimore on Wednesday, snapping a three-game winning streak. Left-hander Noah Schultz is scheduled to start for Chicago. Schultz took the loss in that game, allowing three earned runs on two hits over 4 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts. He has not pitched against Cleveland this season. The Guardians enter on a high note, having beaten Texas 9-4 on Wednesday for their second win in three games. Left-hander Joey Cantillo gets the start for Cleveland. Cantillo earned the win Wednesday, allowing two earned runs on three hits over five innings with four strikeouts. He has been sharp over his last four starts, posting a 2.25 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 24 innings across five appearances. Cantillo’s lone tough outing came June 7 at Texas, when he allowed seven earned runs in five innings. The Guardians are 4-6 in their last 10 games. The White Sox are 6-4 over the same span. Chicago has been installed as a minus-1.5 run favorite, according to sportsbook monitors. The over/under is 8½ runs. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-4 victory for the White Sox. The series continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Progressive Field before both teams take the All-Star break.
