BOSTON (Interstat) — The Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox conclude their three-game series Wednesday afternoon at Fenway Park, with the Red Sox looking to complete a sweep after winning the first two contests by a combined 7-3 margin. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. under partly cloudy skies and 87 degrees. Boston (37-46) has won four straight after taking Monday’s opener 6-3 and Tuesday’s 1-0 pitchers’ duel. The Red Sox have won eight of their last 10, a stretch that has pulled them within 4 1/2 games of the final American League wild-card spot. Washington (43-43) has dropped three of four and sits at .500. Left-hander Ranger Suarez (5-5, 3.12 ERA) starts for Boston. He earned the win Monday against Washington, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings with eight strikeouts. Suarez has been sharp over his last five outings, posting a 2.08 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 30 innings. He has not lost since June 7 at Yankee Stadium. Washington counters with a bullpen-heavy approach. Right-hander Zak Kent (2-3, 4.50) is expected to open. Kent worked a scoreless inning Monday, striking out one, and has not allowed a run in his last two outings covering two innings. The Nationals have used eight relievers in the first two games of the series. The Red Sox offense has been powered by first baseman Willson Contreras, who homered and drove in three runs on Monday. Outfielder James Wood hit a solo homer for Washington in that game. The Nationals have scored only three runs in the series, hitting .190 with one extra-base hit. Boston was installed as a minus-1.5 favorite. The over/under is 10. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-4 Red Sox victory. Following this series, Washington returns home Friday to open a three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Boston begins a nine-game road trip Friday at the Los Angeles Angels.
