WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Los Angeles Dodgers, owners of the best record in the National League at 54-30, open a two-game series Tuesday night against the host Athletics at Sutter Health Park. The Dodgers are coming off a 4-2 victory Sunday in San Diego, a win powered by right-hander Emmet Sheehan. Sheehan (2-3) allowed just one earned run over 5 innings, scattering two hits and striking out five. He will be a player to watch for manager Dave Roberts’ club. The 25-year-old has been inconsistent this season, however. In his previous four starts before Sunday, Sheehan was roughed up for 11 earned runs in just 9 2/3 innings, including a disastrous 1 1/3-inning, three-hit outing against the Angels on June 7. The Athletics (40-44) return home after dropping three of four games on the road to the Los Angeles Angels. Sunday’s 4-1 loss saw left-handed reliever José Suarez turn in a sharp performance: 2 scoreless innings, no hits, two strikeouts. Suarez has been a bright spot in a struggling bullpen. Over his last four appearances covering 7 1/3 innings, he has allowed just two earned runs while striking out eight. However, he was also tagged for four earned runs in one inning against Houston on June 6. The teams played a scoreless game Monday, a likely postponement or rainout. The Dodgers have won five of their last six contests and are 8-2 in their last 10 games. The Athletics have dropped three of their last four. Dodgers’ right-hander (TBD) is expected to start opposite Athletics’ lefty (TBD). Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 Dodgers win. Los Angeles is installed as a -1.5 favorite, with the over/under set at 10.5 runs. Following Tuesday’s contest, the Dodgers travel to San Diego for a three-game series starting Thursday, while the Athletics host the Miami Marlins for a three-game set beginning Friday.
