TORONTO (Interstat) — The New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays open a three-game interleague series Monday night at Rogers Centre, with both teams looking to reverse recent slides. The Mets (35-48) have lost six of their last seven, including a 5-4 setback Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Right-hander Kodai Senga takes the mound for New York seeking his first win since June 2. Senga is 0-3 over his last four starts. In his most recent outing Sunday, he allowed two earned runs on four hits over 5.0 innings against Philadelphia, striking out four, but the Mets fell to 2-11 in his 13 starts this season. Senga’s previous two starts were rougher: he surrendered seven earned runs in 3.2 innings June 23 against the Chicago Cubs, and four earned runs in 4.0 innings June 16 at Cincinnati. Across his last three starts, Senga has a 6.39 ERA over 12.2 innings. The Blue Jays (39-45) have dropped seven of their last eight, capped by Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers. Right-hander Shane Bieber starts for Toronto. Bieber took the loss Sunday despite a solid outing: he allowed two earned runs on five hits over 5.1 innings, striking out four. His previous start June 23 against Houston was far less effective, as he gave up four earned runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings. Despite that stumble, Bieber has posted a 3.16 ERA over his last three starts. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 Blue Jays victory. Toronto is installed as a -1.5-run favorite by gambling lines, with the over/under set at 8.5 total runs. The two struggling clubs are a combined 13 games under .500. Both need strong starts from their aces to halt their respective slides. The series continues Tuesday and Wednesday before each team heads on the road for holiday weekend series.
