NEW YORK (Interstat) — The Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees open a three-game series Monday night at Yankee Stadium II, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. in conditions forecast at 75 degrees with clouds. Detroit (35-49) looks to build on a seesaw weekend series against Houston. The Tigers lost Sunday’s extra-inning affair 7-5 in 10 innings, but took two of three from the Astros overall. New York (48-34) enters having lost four straight, including a weekend sweep at Boston in which the Yankees scored just three runs total. Right-hander Jack Flaherty (2-1, 3.18 ERA in June starts) takes the mound for Detroit. He has been sharp recently, allowing no earned runs in two of his last three outings. In his most recent start Sunday against Houston, Flaherty pitched five scoreless innings, scattering two hits and striking out nine in a no-decision. He also threw five scoreless innings with six strikeouts at Tampa Bay on June 2. The Yankees counter with right-hander Gerrit Cole (2-3, 5.40 ERA over his last five starts). Cole has struggled this month, allowing 15 earned runs across 24⅔ innings in June. He took the loss Saturday at Boston, surrendering four runs on seven hits over 5⅓ innings. His previous start was a 5-3 loss at Detroit on June 22, when he allowed five runs on nine hits in 4⅓ innings. The teams met last week in Detroit, with the Yankees taking two of three. New York won 4-2 on June 24 and 4-3 on June 23, while the Tigers earned a 5-3 victory on June 22. New York’s offense has scuffled, plating just four runs during its current four-game skid. Detroit’s bats showed life Sunday, with Zach McKinstry (2-for-5, home run, two RBIs) and Spencer Torkelson (2-for-2, home run, two RBIs) providing the production. The game simulator projects a 4-3 Tigers victory. New York is a -1.5 favorite on the run line, with the over/under set at eight runs. Following Monday’s matchup, the teams continue the series Tuesday and Wednesday before the Tigers travel to Texas and the Yankees return home to host Minnesota.
