BOSTON (Interstat) — The New York Yankees will try to avoid a four-game sweep Sunday when they face the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. EDT. The forecast calls for 70 degrees and cloudy skies. The Yankees (48-34) have lost the first three games of the series by a combined 16-5 margin, including a 4-1 defeat Saturday. The Red Sox (35-46) have won three straight overall after dropping two of three at Colorado earlier in the week. Right-hander Gerrit Cole will start for the Yankees. Cole has struggled in his last two outings, allowing five earned runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss at Detroit on June 22, then yielding four earned runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings in Saturday’s loss to Boston. He previously had won consecutive starts against the White Sox and Guardians earlier this month. Left-hander Jake Bennett will take the mound for the Red Sox. Bennett has been sharp, allowing one earned run over 6 1/3 innings while striking out three in Saturday’s win over the Yankees. In his previous start June 22 at Colorado, he tossed six shutout innings with nine strikeouts but took a hard-luck loss. Over his past three outings, Bennett has a 1.53 ERA. Boston has won four of the last five head-to-head meetings at Fenway, dating to an April series in which the Yankees swept three games in Boston. The Red Sox have outscored New York 16-5 in the current set. Boston designated hitter Masataka Yoshida went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI in Saturday’s win. New York is 12-10 in June but has lost five of its last seven. Boston is 8-15 this month despite the current winning streak. The Yankees open a six-game homestand Monday against the Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox begin a three-game series Monday at Fenway against the Washington Nationals. New York is a -1.5 favorite, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. The over/under is 7.5 runs. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Boston victory.
