DETROIT (Interstat) — The New York Yankees will try to split the two-game series when they face the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night at Comerica Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies with a temperature of 75 degrees. The Yankees (46-31) will start left-hander Tarik Skubal (3-3). The Tigers (34-44) counter with left-hander Framber Valdez. New York dropped the series opener 5-3 on Monday, evening the season series at one win apiece. The Yankees won 4-3 on Tuesday. Skubal makes his 15th start of the season. He has not faced the Tigers this year. Valdez will look to build on his last outing — a win against the Yankees on Monday in which he allowed one run on four hits over six innings with eight strikeouts. Over his past three starts, Valdez has a 1.59 ERA, allowing two earned runs across 17 innings while striking out 19. Players to watch Yankees: Left-handed reliever Ryan Yarbrough has been effective in recent appearances against the Tigers. In Monday’s loss, he pitched two scoreless innings, allowing no hits. Over his past six outings, Yarbrough has a 3.27 ERA, though he was tagged for four earned runs in one inning June 20 against Cincinnati. Tigers: Framber Valdez was the winning pitcher Monday. He has allowed one earned run or fewer in three of his past four starts. Series notes The Tigers have won consecutive games for the first time since June 14-15. Detroit took two of three from the Chicago White Sox over the weekend before beating the Yankees on Monday. The Yankees have lost four of their past six games after entering the week with a 4 1/2-game lead in the AL East. Projection Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 Yankees victory. Detroit is a minus-1.5 favorite on the run line, according to pregame odds. The over/under is 7 1/2 runs. Up next Following Wednesday’s game, the Yankees travel to Boston for a four-game series starting Thursday. The Tigers return home to host the Houston Astros for four games beginning Thursday. The two teams will meet again Monday in New York for a three-game set.
