ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — The St. Louis Cardinals look for a second straight win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium III. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. CT under cloudy skies with a temperature of 77 degrees. Right-hander Andre Pallante (4-1, 3.38 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Cardinals. Pallante earned the win in Monday’s 3-2 victory over Arizona, allowing one run on six hits over six innings with two strikeouts. He has won his last four decisions, including a dominant seven-inning, two-run performance against San Diego on June 16. The Diamondbacks will counter with left-hander Matthew Liberatore (3-4, 5.01 ERA). The 25-year-old is coming off a loss in his last start and will be making his first appearance against St. Louis this season. St. Louis (42-34) enters play three games over .500 and tied for second place in the National League Central. Arizona (39-39) sits at .500, five games back in the NL West. Arizona right-hander Merrill Kelly has struggled recently, losing his last five starts. Over that span, he has posted a 6.02 ERA, allowing 36 hits and 20 earned runs in 27 2/3 innings. In his most recent outing Monday against the Cardinals, he took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings. Pallante has been sharp over his last five appearances, posting a 2.60 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of those outings. The Cardinals have won the first two games of this four-game series. Monday’s 3-2 win featured a strong relief effort from Riley O’Brien and JoJo Romero, who combined for two scoreless innings. The teams played to a 0-0 tie Tuesday in a game suspended prior to completion. Arizona has lost four of its last five games overall. St. Louis has won four of its last six. The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-5 Cardinals victory. Both teams conclude the series Thursday afternoon before heading in opposite directions. The Diamondbacks travel to Tampa Bay for a three-game set beginning Friday. The Cardinals host Miami for a three-game series starting Friday.
