DETROIT (Interstat) — The New York Yankees, owners of the American League’s best record, will send right-hander Casey Mize (2-4) to the mound Tuesday to face the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. under cloudy skies with a temperature of 74 degrees. The Yankees (46-30) enter the game having lost four of their last five, including a 5-3 defeat to the Tigers on Monday in the series opener. New York dropped two of three over the weekend to the Cincinnati Reds, falling 4-1 on Sunday despite 1⅓ scoreless innings from reliever Paul Blackburn. Blackburn, a key bullpen piece, has been effective in recent outings. Over his last seven appearances, covering 11⅔ innings, he has allowed just three earned runs while striking out eight. In Sunday’s loss, he entered with runners on and retired all four batters he faced. Detroit (33-44) has won four straight, including a 5-4, 10-inning victory Sunday against the Chicago White Sox. Right-hander Keider Montero earned the win in that game, allowing three runs on six hits over seven innings with three strikeouts. Montero has been sharp at home. In his last three starts at Comerica Park, he has a 2.12 ERA over 19 innings, including six shutout innings against Minnesota on June 11. Mize will make his 12th start of the season. He has struggled recently, posting a 5.40 ERA over his last three outings. The Tigers touched him for four runs on seven hits over five innings in a June 1 meeting at Yankee Stadium. Yankees first baseman Ben Rice has been a bright spot. He went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI in Sunday’s loss and is hitting .318 with four homers over his last 10 games. Dillon Dingler has keyed the Tigers’ recent surge. The catcher drove in two runs Sunday, including a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning. He is hitting .286 with three homers and 11 RBIs in June. New York is 4-3 against Detroit this season, outscoring the Tigers 36-28. A simulation by Interstat projects a 6-4 Yankees victory. New York is a -1.5 run favorite, with the over/under set at 7½. The two teams continue the three-game series Wednesday before the Yankees travel to Boston and the Tigers host Houston.
