CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox meet Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Cleveland (41-37) holds a one-game edge over Chicago (39-37) in the American League Central standings, despite losing Monday’s series opener 2-0. Cleveland sends left-hander Parker Messick (7-3, 3.12 ERA) to the mound. Messick has won three of his past four decisions. Chicago counters with right-hander Davis Martin, who has been inconsistent this season but pitched six innings of one-run ball in a no-decision at Detroit on Sunday. Key player to watch for the Guardians is right-hander Slade Cecconi. Over his past five outings, Cecconi has posted a 2.67 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 27 innings, though he has taken four consecutive no-decisions or losses, including a quality start at Houston on Sunday. For the White Sox, Martin is also the player to watch. He struck out four and allowed one earned run in six innings at Detroit on June 21, but he was shelled for nine earned runs in 3 1/3 innings at New York on June 16. Martin has been steady at home, allowing two earned runs in 12 innings over his past two starts at Guaranteed Rate Field. Cleveland is coming off a 2-1 loss at Houston on Sunday, its third defeat in four games. The Guardians swept a doubleheader from Detroit on June 12-13 but have lost four of six overall. Chicago dropped a 5-4, 10-inning decision at Detroit on Sunday, its fourth straight loss. The White Sox have lost six of seven after winning four in a row. Tuesday’s forecast calls for 65 degrees and cloudy skies at game time. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 victory for Cleveland. The Guardians are installed as -1.5 run-line favorites. The over/under is 7 runs. Cleveland’s next 10 games include two more at Chicago, then a six-game homestand against Seattle and Texas before hosting the White Sox again July 2-4. Chicago’s next 10 include the series finale Wednesday, a three-game home set against Kansas City, then a road trip to Baltimore before visiting Cleveland.
