AP Sports Preview CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox open a three-game series Monday night at Guaranteed Rate Field, with both teams jockeying for position in the American League Central. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. CDT under a forecast of rain and 59 degrees. Cleveland (41-37) has listed two probable pitchers for the game: Gavin Williams (9-4) and Anthony Kay (6-2). The Guardians are coming off a 2-1 loss Sunday at Houston, managing just one run on five hits. Slade Cecconi took the loss despite allowing two earned runs over six innings, striking out one. Cecconi, a right-hander to watch for Cleveland, has been effective but unlucky recently. Over his last five starts, he has posted a 2.50 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 27 innings, but has gone 0-4 with three no-decisions during that span. His most recent outing Sunday was his fourth consecutive quality start. Chicago (39-37) lost 5-4 in 10 innings Sunday at Detroit, despite a strong start from right-hander Davis Martin. Martin allowed one earned run on five hits over six innings, striking out four. Shortstop Luisangel Acuña homered and drove in two runs, and center fielder Tristan Peters went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Martin, a player to watch for the White Sox, has been inconsistent. He threw six scoreless innings against Atlanta on June 10, but allowed nine earned runs in 3 1/3 innings at New York on June 16. He bounced back Sunday with his third quality start in four outings. The White Sox have lost five of their last six games, while Cleveland has dropped two straight after winning four of five. Monday’s game is the first of six meetings between the division rivals over the next 11 days. The teams play three in Chicago, then three in Cleveland starting July 2. Projection: Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 White Sox victory. Cleveland is a -1.5 favorite. The over/under is 7.5 runs. Upcoming series: Cleveland plays three more at Chicago through Wednesday, then returns home for six games against Seattle and Texas before the White Sox visit July 2-3. Chicago hosts Kansas City for three games after this series, then travels to Baltimore before the Cleveland return series. AP Preview Cleveland (41-37) at Chicago White Sox (39-37), 7:10 p.m. CDT, Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago. Weather: 59, rain. Probable pitchers: Guardians (Interstat) — Gavin Williams (9-4) or Anthony Kay (6-2). White Sox (Interstat) — Davis Martin (2-2).
