YANKEES AT GUARDIANS PREVIEW CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians meet Wednesday in the third game of a four-game series at Progressive Field, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EDT. New York (39-26) enters with the majors’ second-best record and has taken two of the first three games of the series, including a 7-5, 10-inning victory Monday. The Guardians (37-31) are three games back in the AL Central race. The forecast calls for rain and 84 degrees at game time. Pitching Matchup The Yankees will start left-hander Parker Messick (6-2, 3.12 ERA), who has been the club’s most consistent starter in his rookie season. The 24-year-old has won four consecutive decisions, including a 6 2/3-inning, one-run outing against the Athletics on May 31. Cleveland counters with right-hander Gavin Williams (4-2, 2.84 ERA), who has been excellent over his past four starts, allowing just six earned runs across 26 1/3 innings. He struck out 11 over eight scoreless innings in a 1-0 win at Philadelphia on May 22. Players to Watch Yankees right-hander Will Warren has been a key bullpen piece, tossing 4 1/3 innings of two-run relief in Monday’s win. Over his past four appearances, Warren has allowed five earned runs in 21 1/3 innings with 16 strikeouts and a 4-0 record. Guardians outfielder Angel Martínez homered and drove in two runs Monday. He is hitting .304 over his past 10 games. Series History The teams split the first four meetings at Yankee Stadium last week, and the series at Progressive Field has been similarly tight. Cleveland won the opener 2-2 in a game shortened by rain, and New York won the second game in extra innings. Betting Line New York is a -1.5 run-line favorite, with the over/under at 7.5 runs. The Interstat simulator projects a 6-3 Yankees win. What’s at Stake A win would give the Yankees a third consecutive series victory and extend their lead in the AL East, where they hold a 2 1/2-game edge over Baltimore. The Guardians are looking to avoid a fourth loss in five games and keep pace in the division behind Kansas City. Upcoming New York travels to Toronto for a three-game set beginning Friday, while Cleveland returns home to host Detroit in a three-game weekend series.
