PHILLIES AT BLUE JAYS TORONTO (Interstat) — The Philadelphia Phillies open a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night at Rogers Centre, with first pitch scheduled for 7:07 p.m. Philadelphia (35-30) enters the contest having won four of its last six games, including a 9-5 victory Sunday against the Chicago White Sox. The Phillies, who lead the season series 1-0, were installed as minus-1.5 favorites at sportsbooks. The over/under is set at 7.5 runs. A player to watch for Philadelphia is right-handed reliever Jonathan Bowlan. Bowlan has been effective in recent outings, posting scoreless appearances in eight of his last nine. He earned a win Sunday against Chicago, tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Over his previous six appearances spanning 5.2 innings, Bowlan allowed just one earned run while striking out eight. Toronto (32-34) looks to bounce back after splitting a four-game series with Baltimore. The Blue Jays won Sunday 6-4, snapping a two-game skid. Veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman is a key figure for Toronto. Gausman earned the win Sunday against Baltimore, allowing four earned runs on five hits over five innings with five strikeouts. In his prior three starts, Gausman had posted a 1.70 ERA, including a win May 22 against Pittsburgh in which he threw 6.2 innings of one-run ball. However, he struggled May 11 against Tampa Bay, surrendering six earned runs in 4.2 innings. According to the Interstat game simulator, Philadelphia is projected to win 7-4. Recent success at the plate has helped the Phillies. Catcher Rafael Marchán went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in Sunday’s win. Outfielder Brandon Marsh added a home run and two RBIs. For Toronto, outfielder Yohendrick Piñango collected two hits, including a home run, with an RBI in Sunday’s victory. Right-hander Louis Varland threw 1.1 scoreless innings in relief. The Phillies have won four of their last five games away from home. Toronto has dropped five of its last seven at Rogers Centre. Following Monday’s contest, the teams meet again Tuesday and Wednesday before Philadelphia travels to Milwaukee for a weekend series. Toronto hosts the New York Yankees beginning Friday.
