AP Sports Preview CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians open a three-game series Monday night at Progressive Field, with the first-place Yankees looking to build on a 38-26 record against a Guardians team that has taken two of three meetings this season. Right-hander Will Warren (7-1, 3.12 ERA) is scheduled to start for New York, which leads the American League East. The Guardians (37-30) will counter with right-hander Gavin Williams (9-3, 3.45 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. EDT under clear skies with a temperature of 74 degrees. The Yankees are coming off a 6-1 victory Sunday against Boston, in which left-hander Cam Schlittler tossed 5 2/3 innings of four-hit ball, striking out five. Schlittler has been a key contributor, going 3-2 over his past five starts with a 2.74 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings. He lost to Cleveland on June 2, allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Cleveland enters after a 10-0 loss Sunday at Texas, where left-hander Will Dion lasted just two innings, allowing one run on three hits. Dion has struggled recently, posting an 8.44 ERA over his past four relief appearances, spanning eight innings. The Guardians won two of three in New York last week, taking the series with a 5-4 victory June 3 and a 9-4 win June 2. The Yankees won the series finale 2-1 on June 4. New York’s offense has been powered by center fielder Trent Grisham, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI on Sunday, and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who homered and drove in three runs. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Yankees victory. New York is a -1.5 favorite, with the over/under set at 7.5 runs. Following Monday’s game, the teams meet again Tuesday and Wednesday before the Yankees travel to Toronto for a weekend series and the Guardians return home to host Detroit.
