CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The Cleveland Guardians look to bounce back and even their series against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night at Progressive Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies with a temperature of 67 degrees. The Guardians (32-23) enter the contest with the better record but are coming off a 10-2 loss to Washington on Monday. Cleveland had won three straight games before that defeat. Cleveland will send left-hander Joey Cantillo (4-1, 3.12 ERA) to the mound. Cantillo has been sharp, allowing two earned runs or fewer in four of his last five starts. The Guardians have won each of his last four outings. Washington (27-27) counters with right-hander Cade Cavalli (2-3, 4.50 ERA). The Nationals have won two straight games, both against the Atlanta Braves, and took the series opener Monday on the strength of a six-run fourth inning. Players to watch Nationals: LHP Foster Griffin has been a key arm out of the bullpen. Over his last three appearances, spanning 15 2/3 innings, Griffin has a 1.72 ERA with 16 strikeouts. He threw six scoreless innings Sunday against Atlanta, allowing three hits with six strikeouts. Guardians: LHP Parker Messick has been dominant of late, winning his last four decisions. In his past four starts, Messick has allowed just five earned runs over 23 innings. He threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings Sunday against the Phillies. Series history: The teams split two games last season in Washington. The Nationals’ 10-2 win Monday was the largest margin of victory in the series since 2022. Game notes: Cleveland is 17-10 at home this season. Washington is 12-14 on the road. … The Guardians have been installed as 1.5-run favorites, according to Interstat’s game simulator, which projects a 7-5 Cleveland victory. The over/under is 7.5 runs. … The series continues Wednesday afternoon, with the Guardians then hosting the Boston Red Sox for a weekend series. The Nationals travel to face the San Diego Padres on Friday.
