Preview
PHOENIX (Interstat) — The San Francisco Giants will turn to right-hander Merrill Kelly to try to salvage a series split against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday evening at Chase Field. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. MST. San Francisco (20-28) has lost three straight, including a 12-2 blowout Monday. Arizona (23-23) has won four of its past six and sits at .500. The Diamondbacks were installed as minus-1.5 favorites with an over/under of 8.5 runs. Kelly (3-3) will make his 11th start of the season. He is coming off a hard-luck outing Thursday against the Dodgers, allowing two runs over six innings in a no-decision. The 6-foot-2 right-hander has a 3.60 ERA over his past four starts. Initially, the Giants had listed Tyler Mahle (1-5) as the probable, but Kelly will take the ball. Arizona counters with right-hander Zac Gallen, who earned the win Monday against these same Giants, allowing two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts over six innings. Gallen (2-4) struggled in his two prior outings, giving up 13 earned runs over 8 1/3 innings against Texas and Pittsburgh. The 6-foot-2 right-hander has a 5.60 ERA on the season. The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-5 Giants win. Following the series, both teams will play in San Francisco starting Monday, May 25. The Diamondbacks return home Thursday for a four-game set against Colorado before that series. The Giants host the Chicago White Sox for a weekend series beginning Friday.
