WASHINGTON (Interstat) — The New York Mets will try to build on a dramatic 16-7, 12-inning victory when they face the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night at Nationals Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT, with rain and a temperature of 79 degrees in the forecast. Right-hander Zack Littell (2-4, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Mets (21-26), who have won four of their last five games. Littell has struggled recently, allowing 12 earned runs over his last 14 innings across three starts. He will face a Nationals lineup that scored seven runs in Monday’s loss but has dropped two straight and four of six. Washington (23-25) has not announced a starter but is expected to turn to right-hander Jake Irvin (1-3, 5.21 ERA). Irvin took a no-decision Monday, allowing one earned run on five hits over four innings with six strikeouts. In his previous start, he was hammered for five runs in three innings at Cincinnati. The Mets’ offense has been explosive, scoring 16 runs Monday — their highest total of the season. Shortstop Bo Bichette led the way, going 3 for 6 with a home run and three RBIs. Over his last 10 games, Bichette is batting .278 with two homers and six RBIs, though he had been in a 1-for-18 slump before breaking out Monday. Washington will counter with a lineup that has been inconsistent. The Nationals have scored three runs or fewer in three of their last four games. Infielder Luis García Jr. has been a bright spot, hitting .333 over his last seven games. The Mets have dominated the season series, winning four of five meetings, including two of three in this set. In the last matchup before Wednesday, New York pulled out a 5-4 win on Tuesday behind a strong relief performance by Austin Warren, who threw two scoreless innings. The Interstat’s game simulator projects a close contest, favoring the Mets 6-5. Both teams are looking to gain ground in their respective divisions. The Mets sit fourth in the NL East, 6½ games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves. The Nationals are third in the division, 5½ games back. After Wednesday’s game, New York travels to Miami for a three-game series beginning Friday, while Washington heads to Atlanta for a three-game set. Notes: Mets outfielder Carson Benge has hit safely in four of his last five games, driving in seven runs. … Nationals left-hander Mitchell Parker has a 1.93 ERA over his last three relief appearances. … The Mets are 12-11 on the road; the Nationals are 11-12 at home.
