PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates conclude a three-game series Sunday afternoon at PNC Park, with the teams splitting the first two contests in dramatic fashion. Philadelphia (23-23) enters the game at .500 after a 6-0 shutout victory Saturday, one day after outlasting the Pirates 11-9 in 10 innings. The Phillies have won four of their past five games and six of their last eight. Pittsburgh (24-22) looks to bounce back after managing just six hits in Saturday’s loss. The Pirates have dropped three of their past four contests overall. Pitching matchup The pitching matchup features two right-handers, though neither starter has been officially confirmed. The Phillies are expected to turn to left-hander Cristopher Sánchez, who has been dominant in his recent outings. Sánchez pitched a complete-game shutout Saturday against these same Pirates, allowing six hits with 13 strikeouts. In his past four starts, he has a 0.54 ERA with 37 strikeouts over 30 innings, with the only blemish a May 23 loss to the Chicago Cubs in which he allowed six earned runs. Sánchez has been particularly effective against Pittsburgh, with a 2.70 ERA in eight career appearances (five starts). Players to watch For Philadelphia, Bryce Harper drove in three runs Saturday, including a home run, and Alec Bohm had two hits. The Phillies offense has averaged 7.2 runs over the past five games. Pittsburgh reliever Isaac Mattson has been used frequently in recent outings. Saturday, he worked 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Over his past four appearances, he has allowed no runs and two hits in 2.1 innings. However, he gave up five earned runs in 0.2 innings in a May 30 loss to St. Louis. Series context The Phillies have won four of five meetings this season against Pittsburgh and will try to take the series Sunday before heading home to host Cincinnati for three games beginning Monday. The Pirates, after Sunday, travel to St. Louis for a three-game set starting Tuesday. Weather and odds First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. EDT under partly cloudy skies with temperatures near 72 degrees. InterStat’s game simulator projects a 7-5 Philadelphia victory. Betting markets list Pittsburgh as a 1.5-run favorite, with the over/under set at seven runs.
