NEW YORK (Interstat) — The Subway Series reaches its finale Sunday afternoon at Citi Field, where the New York Mets seek a series win against the New York Yankees after splitting the first two games. The Yankees (28-17) hold the best record in the American League and will send left-hander Ryan Weathers (2-2, 4.01 ERA) to the mound. Weathers has been inconsistent but the Yankees have won three of his last four starts. The Mets (18-26) had not announced a starter as of Saturday afternoon, but their bullpen figures to be heavily taxed after using eight relievers over the first two games. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. with the forecast calling for partly cloudy skies and 76 degrees. The Yankees won Friday’s opener 5-2 behind a dominant outing from rookie right-hander Cam Schlittler, who allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings while striking out nine. Schlittler has been electric in May, posting a 0.96 ERA over his last four starts. First baseman Ben Rice homered and drove in a run, and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. had three hits with two RBIs. But the Mets rebounded Saturday with a 2-1 victory, ending a three-game skid. Their bullpen, led by right-hander Tobias Myers, has been a bright spot. Myers tossed two scoreless innings in Friday’s loss and has allowed just one earned run over his last nine appearances covering 12 2/3 innings, striking out 13. He is expected to be available again Sunday. The Yankees, despite the loss Saturday, have been playing well overall, winning six of their last nine. They are 12-8 on the road. The Mets have struggled to sustain momentum, going 4-6 in their last 10 and ranking near the bottom of the National League in runs scored. Offensively, the Yankees rely on a deep lineup that averages 5.2 runs per game. The Mets, by contrast, average just 3.9 runs and have been held to two or fewer runs in four of their last seven. The game is the final one before both teams embark on extended road trips. The Yankees head home to face Toronto in a four-game series, while the Mets visit Washington for four games. The betting line has the Yankees as a 1.5-run favorite, with the over/under set at 8. A computer simulation projects a 5-3 Mets victory. Players to watch include Schlittler, who has emerged as a reliable arm for the Yankees, and Myers, whose effectiveness out of the Mets’ bullpen could be pivotal in a tight late-game situation. Sunday’s attendance is expected to be near capacity as the crosstown rivals conclude this two-game set.
