PHOENIX (Interstat) — The Pittsburgh Pirates conclude a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday afternoon at Chase Field, with both teams seeking to build momentum in the early season. Pittsburgh (19-17) enters the game after suffering a 9-0 loss to Arizona on Tuesday, marking the Pirates’ fourth defeat in their past six contests. The Pirates have been outscored 22-6 in their two games at Chase Field this week. Right-hander Mitch Keller (3-1, 3.12 ERA) is set to start for Pittsburgh. Keller has won his past two decisions, allowing three earned runs over 12 innings in that span. Arizona (17-17) counters with left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (1-2, 3.86 ERA). Rodriguez threw seven shutout innings Tuesday, striking out seven while allowing two hits, to earn the win over the Pirates. He is 4-1 in his past five starts and has not lost since April 9. Pittsburgh’s Bubba Chandler, a rookie right-hander, is a player to watch after taking the loss Tuesday. Chandler (0-1, 5.68 ERA) allowed two earned runs on two hits over five innings, striking out four. Over his past five starts, Chandler has a 5.48 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 25.1 innings. Rodriguez, meanwhile, has been Arizona’s most consistent starter. Over his past four appearances, the left-hander has a 3.31 ERA — but that number drops to 0.00 in his past two outings, spanning 11.2 innings. Thursday’s game also carries historical significance: the teams played to a 0-0 tie Wednesday, a game postponed by rain. The Pirates have not scored since Sunday’s 1-0 win over Cincinnati. The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-3 Pirates victory. Pittsburgh is a -1.5 run favorite and the over/under is set at 8.5 runs. Following Thursday’s game, the Pirates travel to San Francisco for three games starting Friday. Arizona hosts the New York Mets for a three-game series beginning Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. MST.
